Given that the VIA chip is probably only going to give you 2D acceleration while Cinnamon needs 3D acceleration and KDE also optionally uses that, I suggest you use either the MATE or Xfce edition of Linux Mint. Probably you'll need to research that some further. The "VIA Chrome9 HC IGP" is going to give you some work though.

Put the Linux Mint ISO you want to use on a USB, as per. Documentation is included in that folder. Go to the Windows folder you'll find in the extracted file and install it from there. Suggest you download the file plpbt-5.0.14.zip and extract it on Windows. It's waaaaay too much hassle to install a single system. You need to install over network if your system supports it. (Also, what is the state of hardware support for 3 and 4? For all intents and purposes though, only a single partition shows up (at least according to the Windows tools)Ħ) The WindowsXP version installed on the machine is the Chinese version (i.e. However, from my investigations so far, it appears that this machine has a number of hardware-support gotchas.Ģ) The BIOS (American Megatrends v 02.6.1) is old enough that it doesn't support booting from USB yetģ) It uses a "VIA Chrome9 HC IGP" integrated graphicsĥ) Of the 149GB hard drive, 30GB is currently used by Windows and the associated programs and/or junk the previous owner has left behind. I've got a HP Mini netbook that I'd like to install Linux Mint to (replacing the existing XP setup).
